Thanked 0 Times in 0 PostsWhite Noise(hiss)
I noticed white noise on three different mp3 players that I owned which I learned to live with, but then I noticed no white with some songs then by trying numerous audio conversion programs that some produced mp3 files with a lot white noise and some with virtually no noise, I also noticed that using a computer with a powerful processor and a lot of ram produces virtually no audible noise as long as I didn't run and programs or processes while the conversion software was running, I even disabled the screen saver because I noticed a difference in sound quality with the screensaver coming on, it seems audio converting software are inherently prone to interuption by other processes running, disabling all nonessential processes seems to yield greater results, I also discovered by chance that having one corrupted file on the mp3 can cause hiss from the get go, why this so I dont know, but I had it happen on all three of my mp3 players( dane-electric sd flash player, rca lyra 512mb sd flash player, rca lyra 5gb hdd player) the corrupted files often sound just like the rest of the files but produce white noise. sometimes recoding the files fixes the file but sometimes the only that works is finding a new file and deleting the old one, the only way to weed out bad files is to copy them one by one and listen to them until you suddenly get a hiss, also I noticed that windows sometimes during the copy and paste process crosses file tag info so that when you play a song the wrong song title appears for the song that is playing, I find that copying and pasting in blocks seems to minimize this problem, also the file encoding program that comes with windows media center seems to produce virtually no white noise files.
P.S. sorry for the run on sentence.

Well when the source itself is recorded in a studio, there is going to be very very minimal hiss. Assuming that one has a powerful computer with dual core processor etc then there is no need to close programs, running tasks etc.
Encoding does take quite a large chunk of cpu cycles from older computers, and even with older/slower computers you shouldn't get problems with encoding. Generally, a slower computer will not generate a noisy mp3 file compared to a faster PC, it will only take longer to encode the mp3.
If your do get a noisy mp3 file after encoding,
A. You are using a poor encoder
B. There is something else on your computer affecting the encoding process
C. Your source is originally bad.
I don't know what your problem is with writing id3 tags, but that should not affect hissing at all. (It sounds to me, like this problem is from your own computer only)
Either hardware or firmware or a combination of both is causing a fair amount of audible hiss on the M6 TP.Current Rigs:

Thanked 0 Times in 0 PostsNo I had the same results on four different computers, more so on slower computers, my main point was that if you hear hissing its most likely from a corrupt or improperly coded mp3 file not head phones or power supply, its really no different than having a corrupt file on your computer, I've also used almost every encoder on the internet on different computers and they are all pretty much affected the same way duo core or not, if you leave your computer alone then you'll get better sounding mp3's and no hiss guaranteed unless of course the original file is already bad, I have no hiss or white noise on any of my mp3 players so obviously this works. If you search the microsoft website you'll find find alot of imformation on the problems with trying to transfer large amounts of files at the same time.

From all the computers I've used including most of those at my studio, I have not encounted a problem such as yours (I'm playing mp3's and doing other things with roughly 50% cpu utilisation whilst encoding). Corrupt mp3 files means that the computer itself isnt functioning properly, writing the wrong bits to mp3 file during encoding.
Possible symptoms are a corrupt hdd, incorrect settings for IDE controllers, poor ram etc etc. Such factors may affect the computers ability to multitask, which possibly leads to problems you are encountering.
I've used LAME (command line) and Fraunhofer encoders, both have no problems if I multitask while encoding.
Although yes i agree that sometimes a poor source will have hiss thats not related to the hardware or headphones. However, that problem is easily ruled out when using multiple DAPs. For example, if i want to rule out that my encoding is not errornous, then I can test it on 2 mp3 players and perhaps through my computer's soundcard. Now if on one specific player the mp3 produces hiss, whilst the computer and other mp3 player do not, then clearly that mp3 player producing hiss is at fault.Last edited by Blackstar; 08-21-2007 at 12:32 PM.
