I thought it was legal to upload such songs if you own the player bundled with these songs and if it is for backup purposes. Apparantly, it is not. Can anyone clarify?

it should be legal, as it is "demo song" (such songs are available from iriver and iAUDIO sites for example)... and deleting file from upload services is quite random thing - typically: "MP3 with site address in the file = delete as it probably is illegal" as this is the way of distributing ripped CD's

Those songs by Elmer Bertstein don't appear to be free music. Rather they are protected and unless you have licensing to publish them online, than it is illegal to do so.
You could however upload them and ask people to delete it after 24 hours, although its not likely that would happen, and the 24hour rule doesn't apply to all countries either. Its best to put a warning in the FAQ/guide telling people to backup the songs before, or risk losing it forever.
Meizu being as they are, I'm uncertain whether they themselves have acquired permission to use these songs as the base installation on their players. But regardless if they have permission to do so or not, its unethical to continue distributing an artists hard work.Current Rigs:
8GB iAudio 7 > Not in use
4GB + 32GB iAudio D2 > Alessandro MS-Pro
Sony MZ-NH1 > Headroom Total Bithead > Grado Labs PS-1
2GB Meizu M6 T1 > Not in use
8GB iPod Touch 2G > Shure SE530

The 'bundled' songs that came on my M6 8gb were an outstanding choice for demonstrating the stunning sound quality of the player.
This is my very first introduction to Chinese consumer electronics, though I own well over 100 DAP/PMP units, and I'm very impressed.
I also ordered the M3 8gb and am expecting it any day now.
I can't wait!

that might also be because the preloaded songs now are in FLAC
