iPhone 3G

Before the off-topic iPhone posts start popping up all over, in the completely wrong places (which is annoying and misleading as to what you're reading), let me create the topic where it really belongs.

So, what do you all think of it?

Personally, I really like the new design, which now looks absolutely gorgeous compared to the previous one (which I disliked very much). As to what it has new, well... there's not much new hardware-wise, just 3G (finally) and built-in GPS (which is very neat IMO). The really cool things though are the 2.0 firmware, SDK, and third-party software (which were more or less expected), and the insanely killer price.

With this price, Apple is off to conquer the market everywhere before the really powerful machines come out (read NVIDIA APX2500 and similar devices), and secure a nice little monopoly for itself.

Interesting news, for sure. I'm trying to decide if its worth ditching my current 4gb iPhone for one of these but since I have T-Mobile I don't think that will be happening just yet.

And I can't be the only one who's a little fuzzy as to which networks support 3g, and where. I don't even know if it's available in my area.

Definately digging the GPS, and lower price.

Not liking that it will be slightly thicker, tho

IT FINALLY COMES TO THE NETHERLANDS

I'll get this iPhone 3G instead of the everlasting-M8 simple because it will be out in my country next month for a very nice price :P

For me not at lot has changed to be honest. All this $299 for 16gb worlwide price fix rubbish, will not affect me as I live in the UK and the price will surely get bumped up. As per usual everyones banging on about cheap prices, but have you seen the data plans and contract terms yet?......didn't think so. And anyone trying to pretend that the 3G iphone will not be expensive offline obvioulsy has no idea.

Apple has made a couple of ok adjustments, but it is very similar to the original. My interest in 3G and GPS has always been minimal due to the high cost of data plans. So basically apart form 2 things I don't need, the iphone remains a nice phone with all the same restrictions.

Now in terms of the M8, as I said in another thread, things are not great at the moment. I havn't really been on the forum too much lately and tbh the non-existent M8 is starting to bore me a bit. If there is no concrete evidence of an M8 release in a couple of monthes I may invest in another phone perhaps even an unlocked 3G iphone. But tbh I also find all this apple hype very boring too.

Ok so jobsy put some pretty standard tech (3G and GPS) in the iphone and showed a few apps, added a few functions that should have been there in the first place, expanded his global empire and kept his platform as closed as it ever was......not really that exciting if you ask me. Oh and lets not forget his homage to early 2000's telephony >> his continued dedication to the ever so retro '2 mega pixel camera'

The 3G iphone looks decent, in a few monthes a few million more people will own one and most will continue to act like they are setting some kind of new trend and are in some way original..........blah blah blah yawn yawn....zzzzzzzz

What I'm wondering is if Apple require you to activate the 2 year contract before you buy it. Didn't Jobs say that the iPhone couldn't handle 3G because of it's battery?

That was a full year ago, chips do actually improve in time. About your first question it will depend on which country you're talking about.

Yeah. I really doubt that they will sell an 3G iphone for $199. I'd buy 3 of them for that price.

There's one funny thing about the 3G iPhone though... there's no camera on the front!

They probably decided that a front camera would spoil the design... either that or they're keeping the revolutionary video call feature so that they can "invent" it next year, lol

Spoilers: Roughly 1 year from now Apple will re-release this phone in a slimmer design with a few minor upgrades (that front camera, better back camera, more storage, ect)!

My Meizu
iPhone is a great product, but please don't forget monthly charges involved when comparing with other phones.

$39.99 monthly for the basic plan and at least $30 monthly for data. That's a total of $69.99 monthly, which adds up. During the two year contract, you'll end up not paying $199, but $1878.76 (69.99x24+199) for your new iPhone. I don't think Apple makes money if they sell the iPhone for $199.

Sure, one can argue that you get to make calls for that amount, but the plans are still overpriced. If you subtract your monthly cellphone bill over a two year period from $1878.76, the average user will still end up paying around a grand.

Also, this time, it won't be possible to buy one for $199, take it home and then unlock anymore as they've learned their lesson and activate the phones in store.

So please, don't say the new iPhone costs $199 when comparing with other phones sold unlocked.

Good point Err0r. But Americans are impulse buyers, and by the time most of us figure that out it will be too late!

I pay $50.97 per month for my service with T-Mobile on my iPhone. Thats w/ upgraded text ($4.99) and internet/T-ZONES ($5.99).

Actually, now might be a perfect time for those who are looking for a phone upgrade to pick up a non-3G iPhone on eBay cheap as everyone runs to dump their current phone.

Once the software is available, and after you have paid the early termination fee and the first month of service.
