it is said that the 16gb M8 will be around $430. How is this expensive? I am from the Uk and am used to high prices but even in september that will not be expensive for a phone with this feature set. Where will you find a phone with 16gb, a high res large touch screen and wifi plus all the other options the M8 has for this price in september? The Nokia N95 came out ages ago and the cheapest new ones still cost $430 on ebay uk. An new 8gb iphone costs around $470 on ebay uk and the M8 has a higher spec and you get twice the flash memory for this price. Even in 4 monthes I don't think the price will go down that much. And even if the 8gb iphone drops to around $380 by August (they hold their value quite well and are actually becoming rarer as the 8gb version will be fased out), are you saying you still wouldn't pay an extra $50 for the m8's extra memory and features? The market (particularly the high end of it) is really not moving as fast as you think.
Simply the 8 GB iphone - well - here comes the good support included + qualtiy - but it is more then one year old - got it? And no - I only own a Ipod Toch (but with 32 GB).
And if you are still happy with your n73 - fine. I'am still happy with my m600i (and I am so happy to have 3G - never brows without) - but only as it offerd two years ago features, so that I still can now do stuff most phones can do now for appr. 150 - 200 €. And no - you can absolutly NOT compare the n73 with the m600i. If you are still happy with your n73, you will be happy with the small m8. I do expect more - at least that what the big m8 hopfully will offer in December. But I will not pay more then 300 €.
ok, but it's not easy to find the iphone that cheap. you are right about the
m600i it's a great phone i used it for couple of days but bought w950i as a backup phone.
GPS will be a standard on smartphone at the end 2008, ok for a removable battery , but you'r were ready to wait 18month for that?
No, personally I am ready to wait as long as needed until a device that fit me is available at a correct price. iPhone 1 does not fit me. iPhone 2, maybe, but I do not hope too much given Apple past behavior. m8 still seems like it will be the first out that fit MY bill, but who knows, I just keep checking specs of every smartphone that comes out...
sorry you really sure that you can see a difference between 480x320 and 720x480 on 3.4-3.5" ? i'm not sure You might not know that on a tv hd ready 32" and a full hd 32" there's no differences , the differences appears at 37". So for the screen it's not a good argument
Yes, I AM SURE!!! I have seen both screen resolution myself, and used extensively QVGA and VGA. There is no other way to judge that than to check for yourself, and it is true for TV also. Do not believe what mags say, go to a shop and check the screen for yourself, why do people keep repeating the "it's so small you can not tell the difference anyway" for a 3.5, 15, 20 or 32'' screen (pda, laptop, desktop, TV), while it is so simple to compare the two in 5 minutes? And yes, difference between HD ready/ full HD is perfectly noticeable too on 32'' screen: it all depend how far you are, and what kind of content you watch. HD ready is more than fine for watching a DVD or Bluray wtih the whole family on your 32'' from 4-5 meter, no question. Plug your laptop to your TV and start word/openoffice, and you will cry you did not choose a full HD model...
If you want to watch a movie with a "cinema" experience instead of a TV experience (i.e. the screen fill about all your field of vision, instead of a small part of it), and have a high resolution source like HDDVD or bluray, a full HD tv will beat an HD ready TV for any screen size...you will just sit closer of the small screen, that's all...If you can not see the difference sitting at the "cinema" position, I strongly suggest you consult an ophtalmologist ASAP ;-)

Funny, that you brought that point.
You must have horrible good eyes as even all members of our Institut does not see any difference on a 42" HD Ready and 42" True HD TV screen - under comparable circumstances. (Ok we stand approx. at 50 cm distance).
We compared them last fall when we got to equip an entrance hall.
My students build them into the masks in the hall (so only the screen were visable, no brand, no signatur if HD Ready or not).
Result: we saw (big) differences between the different HD Ready TV brands (Loews, Sony, Toshiba, Samsung, etc.) and the same was true for the True HD TVs.
But: we choose 15 HD Ready screens as 8 out of 9 of us were more satisfied with one of these. Even the second place we gave to a HD Ready. Third to fifth were True HD TVs.
Sometimes, I am happy with my bad eyes (yes, number 16 of our winner screens is in my room now ) - and I was surprised, that all of my students have them, too.
A pitty, that you have to spend more money to have the same satisfaction I got with lower screen resolution.
BTW: one could really see, that different brands uses the same panels. And, if one has a wonderful HD Ready screen, the brands True HD screen was some times bad and vice versa. Unfortunatelly, the price really was important, so the cheap brands fail totally - but that are only our experiences.

50cm? Then you should easily be able to see individual pixels on a full HD 42'' screen, with completely normal eyes...but you will have to move your head to get all the picture, I like to be closer to screen than most, but this would be a little bit close even for me :-)
Most probably, many of your panels advertising HD ready were already 1920 X 1080...or your source was not HD.
If you have two panel s sides by side with a HD source (1920 x 1080), and one of them have a physical resolution of 1920x1080 while the other is 1366x768 or less, you should see the difference very easily. Some people may prefer the 1366x768, if they are more sensitive to other parameters like contrast, color saturation or motion handling...but on a static or slow moving image (wildlife documentary are much better a test than fast-action movie), everybody except the severly visually impared should easily identify the HD screen as giving a more detailed, crisp image...
From what I see now, a large majority of LCD TV with a screen bigger than 42'' are 1920x1080 nowadays...As I do not have buyed one yet (I wait for a good source, don't have bluray yet and my cable analogic SD signal is so bad I fear to see it on a larger screen than I have now), I should not pay more, I expect all LCD > 40'' will be full HD at the time I will buy ;-)
All Plasma will not be HD, but, as nice as they are when new, I have seen one of them aging (my parent own one since 4 years)....This experience tipped me toward LCD, definitively ;-)

I know in the UK it might be more expensive, i live in Canada and I crossed the border and went to the closest Apple store and picked up an iPhone for $399 + tax ($433.91) brought it home unlocked it in 10 min and that was a year ago. But i do see iPhones on ebay going for a lot more, I guess it matters where you live, but this also makes me wonder how the price for the M8 will vary from different locations as well. Ebay is usually known for good deals, i'm on there all the time, but sometimes I find ebay even more expensive then buying it directly from the store.
M8 sounds like a great phone, but I couldn't wait anymore, so I got an iPhone and have been very happy with it, honestly one of the best phones I have ever owned, but i'm sure the M8 will be a great phone also. The warranty thing on the M8, that i don't know about, I knew when I bought my iPhone I was going to void the warranty and had that in mind already and didn't matter to me as every phone I owned only started acting up after the inital 1 year warranty had expired.
In conclusion i'm sure the M8 will be great when it comes out, but someone like me I didn't want to wait anymore so I got the best thing out at that time, and something to remember when the M8 cdoes come out, guess what a few months later something bigger and better will be released and thats a never ending cycle in electronics.
thats my $0.02

Reason: spelling
The iPhone hasn't even been out a year... I have a question... how long were you exactly waiting that you got sick of the wait. Obviously not long since you did buy the iPhone a "year" ago.

11 months ago, a year ago. Not that much difference.

The Meizu M8 goes back to January 2007 around the same time Apple was starting the buzz about their iPhone. A friend of mine who really is into phones told me about these "new style" phones but most talk was about the iPhone as there was more buzz about when it was going to be released and the Meizu M8 was still in early stages of designing and development, but it was suppose to be equivalent to the iPhone and there were many other companies already starting their designs on this style phone as well like the CECT P168.
Sorry, I thought the iPhone came out on July 29, it was June 29. So that's 10 months. Yes! The good ol' CECT 168. What a great, quality phone that turned out to be! Wait... you don't care if your $400 phone fails after a year of use?

No I don't care if it fails after a year, incase you don't pay attention manufacture warranty is only 1 year, so even if it's legit still not covered.
Are you trying to apply that spending all that money and having it crap out shortly after a year would be bad, yes, but what makes you so sure the same thing couldn't happen to the M8? The M8 is still not a cheap phone, actuaclly still pretty expensive from a company that I believe is not as established as other cell phone and PDA companies.
Wouldn't it suck to have you M8 fail during warranty and sending it to China and waiting months for it to come back hopefully fixed? Or after the one year it failing and now you got a slightly less than $400 paper weight. So i'm not sure what that comment was suppose to suggest, but anyways, i'm sure you'll be happy carrying your second battery around every where you go, "just incase" while a normal person would just buy a second charger for work or a car charger because now adays it's so hard to find electrical plugs in this new age.
Oh wait one last thing, yes the CECT 168 was a crappy phone, have you even thought for one second that the Meizu M8 might be nothing but problems in it's first initial year as it is their first prototype? IF you were somewhat knowledgable in electronics you should know that first gen electronics are always full of bugs and if you think the M8 will not be different then your in for a surprise. Look how long it's taking to release the phone I can imagine how long it will take Meizu to troubleshoot know issues and bugs. Look at the LG Prada phone which has ben out for awhile now and my girlfriend has it and it keeps freezing and doing weird things and thats a way more expensive phone that the M8 and from a company that has a lot more experience in cell phones than Meizu and they are still having problems.
So Steve stop acting like you own the company and be realistic like everyone else that believes the M8 has potential to be a great phone but know one can tell because it is not out on the market yet.
What will you have to say when the new Iphone is out?
I also have been waiting for the M8 since July. 07 when I heard the news of this great new phone. Now it is nearly time for the I-Phone 2.0 to come out and it will include all of the same features discussed here although with maybe a smaller screen but 3g and Gps and other included features.
Now here is the big kicker: AT&T has been noted they will offer the new I-Phone 2.0 for : $199 8gb, $299 16gb, $499 32gb. with contract... And it is always easy to get out of contracts. Done it three times in the last two years.
This has been discussed on CNN, FoxNews, Engadget, and others.
So how will Meizu counteract such pricing for a much improved phone when Apples will be out in June and Meizu Maybe September at best.
So again I have waited but at those prices I can afford to buy one of Apples and enjoy it for sometime before Meizu gets to market with their offering.
I HIGHLY doubt that ATT will knock off $200 of the price. It is just a rumor. Yes it would suck to send it in to China, but that might not be the case if you bought it through a distributor such as Dane-Elec, or you could buy a warranty from SquareTrade (that would actually be the smartest idea, plus it's a 2 year warranty). I believe the one that is not knowledgeable in electronics is you. Not all products are FULL of bugs in the first YEAR. If Dane-Elec won't be distributing it, the SquareTrade warranty would be the best choice IF you don't want to wait IF your phone is defective. You can get 2 years of coverage for about $70 if you buy it through eBay. If bought through a retailer, you can get 3 years of coverage AND accidental protection for $100.
I HIGHLY doubt that ATT will knock off $200 of the price. It is just a rumor.
Citing an unnamed source, Fortune claimed that AT&T will subsidize the price of new iPhones capable of accessing the faster 3G data network that the carrier is currently expanding in the U.S. AT&T's $200 rebate or subsidy would be limited to customers who sign a two-year contract; it would not be available through Apple, which also sells the iPhone.
Again CNN, Foxnews, others are quoting this as well. I also have an family member who is a manager with AT&T and has also said that chances are VERY likely this is a done deal. They wish to put themselves further out ahead of the other cellular companies and do their best to put an end to one or two others (namely Sprint who is almost dead anyway & T-Mobile) not sure who else.
Again we will wait and see but a $199 8gb or $299 16gb I-Phone compared to Meizu selling a $400 8gb even unlocked good luck to Meizu especially 3 months after the I-phone 2.0's release.
Why would they knock off $200 of the price when it is selling so well? That would be stupid of them to do that from a business standpoint.
Plain stupidity is taking a company perspective while being a regular consumer. They have their own strategy and I don't really care if they're gonna lose a lot of money, I just wanna get a good phone without having to spend a whole bunch of money.
Anyways, I think it's going to be difficult for Meizu to compete with Apple after the release of 3g iPhone. I guess most of the people never heard of this chinese company and they will go for something which is well known.

Isn't that what is nowadays called a "monopolistic strategy" and as such, considered a crime? I'm not sure I'd like to be a part of it, even if it would save me 200$. But then again, there's no AT&T where I live

It can't be considered Monopolistic as there are 7 main US carriers and offering incentives to join is a regularity of the cellular business in the U.S.
Unlike other countries around the world whom do not use the incetive plan and primarily use the purchase outright model this is the norm here. So no they have nothing to lose but a whole lot to gain! At average cell bills of $70-$100 a month for two years for i-phone users they will make up their $200 investment quickly after adding another 300,000-650,000 new customers based off that pricing model.
Again I am lured by this only because AT&T constantly changes their contracts and ups the pricing allowing me to kill the contract rather easily. In the US any material affect to a cellular contract made after the user signs up is considered an open out to cancel that contract as it is federally mandated to give you that option without any penalties financial or otherwise.
Again I have done this numerous times in the last few years.

I hate to wave the term 'fanboy' around because of the arguments it spawns, but surely the term applies neatly to you Steve. You attacked me a few weeks ago, for merely buying an iPhone. And now you are in a corner. I think everyone realises how nice the M8 is - stop shouting out the spec list, we all know, it's great, but in case you haven't noticed, there's still no official release date and the IPhone is already out, boasting most of the features the M8 does, not to mention an actual working model. And you can forget your speech on how you hate conversion / itunes etc, conversion is necessary for me, not being able to afford any more than an 8 gb version, and most people that have their PC on all day wouldn't care less if its converting video. As for iTunes, it's not that bad, it sorted all my album art, and I know drag and drop is nice, but it's not enough to put me off the Jesus phone. And sorry, but the iPhone just got cut to £169 in the UK - for the 8 GB version. That's right. You can stroll into an O2 store, pick one up on the pretense of getting a contract later, then b*gger off and unlock it. I believe that's astoundingly good value. Of course it's a tad annoying I bought one a week before the price cut, but... my parents agreed to pay for a bit of my iPhone, so they would probably have put much less towards it anyway :D
